Blueberry Protein Weight Loss Breakfast Smoothie

As registered dietitians and personal trainers we feel lucky to work with so many awesome clients.  Most want to have some fun and enjoy indulging but also know when it’s time to get back on track and tighten the reigns– and trust us, these twin sisters get it!  Yes, it’s not just our clients who at times feel like they need to undo the damage from overindulging — or just falling off the healthy track. We, too have times when we just want to undo the damage that we did over a day or so away from our veggie-packed kitchens. That’s why we created this Blueberry Protein Weight Loss Breakfast smoothie (a.k.a morning dazzler) to get your mind and body back on the fast track to slim–while losing the bloat and feeling satisfied!

While our clients love getting right back on track by sipping our Kale Recharge and Detox Smoothie, Raspberry Ginger Detox or our Detoxifying Green Tea Smoothie (which all work magic), they’re loving this new Blueberry Protein Weight Loss Breakfast Smoothie as much as we are!  Aside from it being the perfect way to reboot the body (see below), this smoothie tastes yummy, so it’s ideal when your mind and taste buds aren’t feeling like they’re ready to dive in to very bland foods that many people believe are the only foods allowed when they’re trying to cleanse the body from the damage of overindulgence.  Admittedly, especially when we just get back from a vacay, our minds are still a little in la-la land and our taste buds want to be tantalized and that’s when this healthy, cleansing number really does the trick!

Although your body was created and was originally equipped to detox and cleanse itself on its own, we’re now bombarded with thousands of chemicals in our modern world and environment, so our body can use all the assistance it can get to get those toxins out. These toxins create chronic inflammation that makes it harder to lose weight and easier to gain weight, while also creating free radicals that contribute to nearly every chronic disease The health-promoting ingredients in this smoothie assist it in its process.  And this drink does just that!

This smoothie is a superstar when it comes to weight loss and flushing bloat and toxins from the body!  Here’s how it works:

For weight loss:

It’s super-satisfying– with just 224 calories, it will keep you satiated with it’s 20 grams of protein.  It will power you through your morning keeping your energy levels stable so you don’t experience an energy crash that would have you craving a quick sugar pick-me-up (this means you won’t find yourself diving into the vending machine mid-morning in search of an energy boost).

More reasons to sip this blue smoothie to assist in weight loss?

The blueberries! Research suggests they actually may assist in weight loss (yippee!) since they contain the phytochemical C3G that may increase production of both adiponectin (which enhances fat metabolism) and leptin (which suppresses appetite). Oh yeah!

The lemon! Not only is lemon a superstar when it comes to its’ antioxidants and fighting against the inflammation that makes it harder to lose weight, and easier to gain weight, but research shows it’s rich in potent polyphenols that help to suppress body fat accumulation and prevent obesity (1.). So use it liberally, the more the better!

For flushing bloat:

Starting the day with this nutrient and water-filled smoothie helps to flush out excess salt and the bloated and puffy feeling that comes with it. The high water in combination with the potassium from the blueberry and lemon flushes bloat by restoring normal fluid balance so you can kiss puffiness goodbye.

The blueberries are loaded with fiber, which helps to flush waste out your colon (goodbye constipation and unsightly gut bulges from it–hello flatter belly. Oh Yeah!)

For “mopping up” free radicals and toxins that age and damage your body:

This is the reason why we like to drink this smoothie in the morning and have our clients do the same…

There’s no better time to flood your body with nutrients that help to rejuvenate your cells and that help your liver to do its’ job of detoxifying invaders (chemicals, smog, toxins, alcohol, etc.) that could harm the body. However, you can drink this babe any time of day and it will still work is magic.

The blueberries flood your body with anti-aging and disease-fighting phytonutrients and anti-inflammatory compounds as well as bloat-fighting potassium and water!

Lemon helps to promote the activity of a liver enzyme that converts harmful, toxic substances to less harsh chemicals (via the liver through a compound called d-limonene.). Lemon, is packed with vitamin C, which is a potent antioxidant which mops up free radicals from environmental toxins, stress, alcohol, fatty foods and other toxins and helps to prevent them from damaging your body.

Blueberry Protein Weight Loss Breakfast Smoothie

This low-cal smoothie (only 225 calories, for the calorie-counters out there), serves up satisfaction with a whopping 20 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber. Thanks to its blueberries, this smoothie can enhance fat metabolism as the phytochemical Cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) increases the production of adiponectin, while also increasing the appetite-suppressing hormone, leptin. Feel free to squeeze even more lemon in the smoothie than the recipe calls for since it can help fight against the chronic inflammation which makes it harder to lose weight and easier to gain weight, while its’ polyphenols may help to suppress body fat accumulation and prevent obesity.

Enjoy this sipster for breakfast to take the edge off hunger, prevent overeating, flush bloat and help set your mind & body on the healthy track.

    1. Hi Rachel! You could use sunflower or peanut butter and for the almond milk, you could substitute unsweetened cashew milk or cow’s milk. We hope you enjoy it! xoxo

    1. Hi Shannon! You don’t have to use the almond butter–you may just feel a little less satisfied because it provides some staying power and you won’t get the small dose of healthy fat. xoxo

  1. I added a banana for extra flavor and I just love bananas and blueberries. Will that defeat the purpose of the weight lose smoothie?

    1. Hi Savannah! Do you mean you added one extra banana in the recipe and made it one serving? Or two? Let us know! Thanks for trying it! xoox

    2. Good smoothie, but…..very nutty. Think next time I will add less almond butter. Other than that, good and simple to make. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Hi Krista! Oh good! We hope you love it! We don’t have vanilla Carbmaster milk here but I looked it up and it looks like it’s sweetened, so if you use it, you may want to use unsweetened protein powder so this isn’t overly sweet. Ideally, we recommend to try to avoid artificial sweeteners, so if you could use unsweetened almond milk with a protein powder that has stevia, that would be great! Let us know how your version turns out! Thanks Krista! xoxo

    1. Thanks so much for your sweet words Misty! We’re so glad you liked it! Yes, everyone has different tastes, so if it’s not for you, you can decrease it. The healthy fats it provides does offer some satisfaction so just keep in mind it may be a little less filling. Enjoy!! xoxo

  3. Will it defeat the purpose of weight loss if I add a banana? The reason is because it tastes somewhat sour and the banana makes it a bit sweeter.

    1. Hi Mathew! Thanks for your question! You could add a small banana–We’d recommend making it a 1/2 banana and then 1/4 cup blueberries just to keep the carbs in check. Does that make sense? Does that help on your end? Thank you! xoxo

    1. Hi Katie! Thanks for asking! You could substitute the protein powder with 6 ounces nonfat Greek yogurt. We hope you enjoy it! xoxo

    1. Hi Katie! Do you have peanut butter or sunflower butter? Either of those would work! We hope you enjoy it! xoxo

  4. Hi! I’ve been making this for two days now, i’ve found that it makes a very small amount? I also am finding that i’m hungry 2 hours later. I make it exactly how it is instructed! For example, i made this today at 8:30am and it it is 11am and i’m already starving (also had to have a banana at 10 cause I was so hungry!!! Any advice? thank you!!

    1. Hi Colleen! Thanks for making this! We’re so sorry that it’s not keeping you full! Some people don’t feel as full as others when they use protein powder or if they drink smoothies. This may be the case for you? Also, as another reason, our guess would be that you likely typically have a breakfast that is a good bit higher in calories than this and have a drink with it and this so you are used to having a good deal more for breakfast, could this be the case? Please let us know and we can suggest adjustments to this from there! xoxo

  5. I felt like I didn’t eat enough nutrition today. Ironically I had all the items for this wonderful smoothie in my kitchen. Needless to say at 1am I feel so much better. That is, not that I should be smoothing at 1am anyway……. However, now at 2am I feel 100% better and refreshed. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Kris! Thanks so much for letting us know! You’re so welcome, we’re so happy you feel better and that you loved it! We love that you had all the ingredients too! YAY! xoxo

  6. Thank you very much for sharing this information. There are a number of articles out there saying the same things again and again.
Only this article was unique where I actually found what I was searching for.

  7. I make a similar rendition to this smoothie every day! It’s delicious! I use frozen berries, frozen spinach, unsweetened almond milk, organic peanut butter, strawberry protein powder, and 1/2 banana or a little 0% Greek yogurt if I have it laying around. `
